Marian Wright Edelman Institute
Summer 2002 Newsletter

From the Director…

The Institute is having a quiet, yet productive summer.  The Stuart Grant was renewed to support professional development and strategic planning for the Child and Adolescent Development Program (CAD).  Our Hass Grant application was successful in garnering funds to strengthen articulation between CCSF and SFSU to increase our enrollment of City College students in the CAD program.  This funding will also support several conferences – one in the fall on High Quality Early Childhood Education and another in the spring on Leadership and Policy.  Early in the fall, the Institute will also sponsor a book signing by Professor Joseph Illick, author of American Childhoods, which has just arrived at the campus bookstore.

I have been traveling and just returned from the National Leadership Summit on Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health. The conference, sponsored by the Office of Minority Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, drew nearly 3,000 participants from the public and private sectors across the United States. Partnerships were identified as a significant strategy for health access and improvement.  Summit planners identified three key "cross-cutting" issues and five strategies that influence efforts to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in health. More information can be found at http://www.futurehealth.ucsf.edu /pdf_files/PM071902.pdf

A second conference in New York was a funders’ symposium on “The Role of Higher Education in Preparing the Early Childhood Workforce”. Education experts and foundation officers from around the country discussed model programs, state and federal policies, and educational research to improve teacher preparation.  Dr. Rene Dahl will be focusing on many of the programs presented at the conference, contacting directors and gathering information to improve the SFSU program.

I hope everyone is having a restful, and productive summer, enjoying family and friends.  We are looking forward to an exciting fall semester.

For Current CAD Majors!

Welcome back to campus!  This newsletter contains information about the Edelman Institute and its various projects, of which CAD is one. Important information about classes, faculty, advising, and upcoming deadlines will be printed here.  Please remember to check our web site, http://cad.sfsu.edu every week or so for the most current information.

All advising appointments are scheduled through Beth Runciman, CAD office coordinator.  You can reach her in HSS 335 or at 415/405-3911. Check in with an advisor once a semester to make sure you're on the right track to graduate on time, and bring current (unofficial) transcripts with you to the appointment.

The application deadline to intern in Spring 2003 has been moved up to September 15.  Internship applications can be picked up in HSS 335 or filed online at http://cad.sfsu.edu/internsurvey.htm.

We are looking for CAD majors to write brief articles about their CAD classes, internships, and other experiences.  Call 415/405-3911 if you are interested.  This would look great on your resume.

Please note that most faculty members are on vacation for much of the summer, and may keep irregular hours during the academic year.  If you need a faculty or advisor signature, plan to get that taken care of several weeks before the deadline.

Best of luck throughout the semester, CAD majors!

Staff Changes at Jumpstart San Francisco

After three years with Jumpstart, stellar Site Director Jessica Taisey is leaving us to enter a doctoral program at UC Berkeley, and will be missed.  Fortunately, we'll continue to benefit from her skills and passion for literacy development in young children.  She will be conducting the Future Teachers Institute for us this fall, and will serve as a consultant to our program to the degree that her studies allow.

We were very lucky that Kathleen Lu, who did such an outstanding job last year as our Family Involvement Coordinator, agreed to stay on for the summer after her graduation from State.  She is excelling in her role as Summer Program Coordinator, working with our 10 Corps Members who are participating in an intensive Future Teacher's experience working alongside mentor teachers at our 5 preschool sites.  Domingo Jarquin is working with her, continuing in his role as Assistant Program Coordinator.

Lygia Stebbing, our first choice for the new Site Director at Jumpstart San Francisco, will officially come on board in late July. She is a graduate of the University of Delaware and is the former Program Director of the Oaxaca Street Children’s Program in Mexico.  She has also worked with the Latin American Community Center in Wilmington, Delaware; the Casa de la Mujer in Oaxaca; and the I Have A Dream Foundation here in San Francisco.
